Typusfundort: Original: Malabar, Indien. Des Neotypus: Indien, Kerala, Chalakudy River, Panamkulam, 26 km von Chalakudy, auf der Strasse nach Valparai.
Etymologie
Benannt nach der Typuslokalität, Malabar (heute Kerala), Indien.
Verbreitung
Weit verbreitet im Bundesstaat Kerala im südlichen Indien. In Sri Lanka ist Devario malabaricus weit über das westliche Tiefland verbreitet, ungefähr vom Gin-Ganga bis zum Mee-Oya-Becken (etwa von Galle im Süden bis Puttalam im Nordwesten) bis zu einer Höhe von etwa 500 m.
