Syntypen: BMNH 1864.11.15.28 (rechte Hauthälfte), 1866.1.19.17-18 (2).
Typusfundort: Sansibar, Tansania, westlicher Indischer Ozean.
Etymologie
Der Name gymnogenys ist vom griechischen gymno für "nackt" und genys für "Wange", in Bezug auf den Mangel an Schuppen auf allen Teilen, bis auf der hinteren oberen Ecke der Wange, bei dieser Art.
Verbreitung
Beschränkt auf den westlichen Indischen Ozean von Mosambik und St Brandon Shoals, durch die Seychellen Bank zum Arabischen Golf, obwohl die letzte Lokalität auf Exemplaren basiert, die 1861 gesammelt wurden und möglicherweise nicht zuverlässig ist.Tritt auf offenem Geröllboden in relativ tiefem Wasser bis zu Tiefen von mindestens 60 m auf.

Grund für die Gefährdungseinstufung: Diese Art ist wahrscheinlich in der traditionellen Fischerei gefangen, aber es gibt nichts, was auf das Ausbeutungsniveau oder auf die Auswirkungen der Fischerei auf diese Art hinweist. Die Fischerei innerhalb des beschränkten Verbreitungsgebietes wird in der Regel stark ausgeübt, wie etwa in Mosambik und Tansania.
