Etymologie
Brephos (= Fötus, Embryo oder Baby), bezogen auf die geringe Größe (und möglicherweise jugendliches Aussehen) des neotenischen Ostorhinchus parvulus; Amia, ein nicht-binominaler Name, der von Gronow (1763) auf Apogon angewendet wurde, heute ein häufig verwendetes Namensanhängsel in der Familie.
