Etymologie
Etymologie nicht erklärt, vermutlich ein lokaler umgangssprachlicher Name in Indien, möglicherweise abgeleitet von balli-potiah, einem assamesischen Namen für eine andere Schmerle (Acanthocobitis botia (Nemacheilidae); Mehrere aquaristische-Webseitem geben an, dass Botia ein „asiatisches“ Wort für Krieger oder Soldat ist (vielleicht eine Anspielung auf den dorn unter dem Auge?), liefern jedoch keine Quelle.
