Etymologie
Kombiniert aus bivium (= Überschneidung (bi- (= zwei); via (= Weg)); branchia (= Kiemen), bezieht sich auf modifizierte Kiemen, bei denen die Kiemenrechen an jedem Bogen mit Rechen zwischen aufeinanderfolgenden Bögen ineinander greifen, um Nahrungspartikel aus dem Sand zu filtern.
