Syntypen: BMNH 1887.12.7.192 (1) vor Tokyo, 1887.12.7.193 (1) Südpazifik.
Typusfundort: In der Mitte des Südpazfik, Challenger Station 281, 2385 Faden Tiefe; vor Tokyo, Japan, Challenger Station 237, 1873 Faden Tiefe.
Etymologie
Von mollis (= weich), vermutlich in Bezug auf die Fettflosse, die Bathysaurus ferox fehlt. (Übersetzt aus: The ETYFish Project)
Verbreitung
Circumglobal, einschließlich Hawaii-Inseln, aber außer dem Ost-Pazifik; wandert ins westliche Mittelmeer.
IUCN Status
Status: Stand 14.08.2017: LC Least Concern (nicht gefährdet)
Grund für die Gefährdungseinstufung: Es gibt derzeit keine Bedrohungen für Bathysaurus mollis und wegen des Lebensraumes in der Tiefe ist es wenig wahrscheinlich, dass sie durch anthropogene Störungen bedroht ist.
