Etymologie
Aus dem lateinischen australis (aus dem Süden) und lebias, eine nominelle Killifisch-Gattung, die üblicherweise zum Verfassen von generischen Namen der Familie Rivulidae verwendet wird, bezogen auf das Verbreitungsgebiet der Gattung, das südlichste Vorkommen für die Rivulidae bildend.
