Typusfundort: Arroyo Paraiso (oder Canal Muerto), 27°14'15.1"S, 54°02'38.5"W (Karte), Becken des Río Uruguay, Argentinien.
Etymologie
von dem Guaraní-Wort ykeregua (= Nachbar). Der Name basiert auf der Tatsache, dass Australoheros ykeregua und Australoheros forquilha zuvor als konspezifisch behandelt wurden, d. h. als zwei Schwesterarten, die im selben Flusslauf (Río Uruguay) leben, wenn auch nicht sympatrisch.
Verbreitung
Argentinien: Mittleres Einzugsgebiet des Río Uruguay.
