Etymologie
Latinisierung von Ari ( von "Ari gogora"), lokaler bengalischer Name für diesen Wels in Indien [Anmerkung: viele Quellen geben an, dass Arius von einem griechischen Wort abgeleitet ist, das Krieger bedeutet und sich vermutlich auf die starken Rücken- und Brustflossenstacheln bezieht, aber diese Interpretation ist falsch]. Verbreitung
Indo-West-Pazifik: Pakistan im Osten bis Westindonesien, im Norden bis Vietnam und Südchina.
