Etymologie
Phalaena (= Motte), Anspielung nicht erklärt, vielleicht in Anlehnung an ihre mottenartige Färbung, z.B. dunkelbraun umrandet mit Weiß (siehe auch Amblygobius sphynx). (Übersetzt aus: The ETYFish Project)
Verbreitung
Östlicher Indischer Ozean, westlicher Pazifik: Andamanen und Kokos-Keeling-Inseln östlich bis Marquesas und Tuamotu-Inseln, nördlich bis Ryukyu-Inseln, südlich bis Rottnest Island (Westaustralien), Sydney (New South Wales, Australien) und Lord Howe Island.
