Etymologie
Akron (= Gipfel), bezieht sich auf das einzigartige Vorkommen in höheren Lagen unter Austrolebias-Linien; lebias (= griechischer Name für eine Art kleinen Fisch), wurde zuerst von Cuvier (1816) auf Killifische („Les Lebias“) angewendet und jetzt eine gebräuchliche Wurzelnamenbildung in der Ordnung.
