Typusfundort: Monte Postale, Bolca Konservat-Lagerstätte, Italien; frühes Eozän, spätes Ypresium, mittleres Cuisianum, SBZ 11, Alveolina dainelli Zone.
Etymologie
Nach den griechischen Worten mega (= groß) und pterygia (= Flossen), bezieht sich auf die proportional größeren Brust-und Bauch-Flossen im Vergleich zu denen der Typus-Art.
Verbreitung
Nur von der Typuslokalität bekannt.
