Etymologie

Xenos (= seltsam oder fremd), vielleicht bezogen auf die afrikanische Verbreitung einer Familie, die weitgehend aus Asien bekannt ist, oder auf die Seltsamkeit von mystus (abgeleitet von mystax (= Schnurrbart)), bezogen auf „Nasenanhängsel ziemlich lang, bilden ein Paar Barteln so lang wie die Schnauze".
