Benannt nach der Typuslokalität, Indien.

Verbreitung

Indopazifik: Rotes Meer und Südafrika, einschließlich Persischer Golf, Madagaskar und Mauritius nach Osten bis Hongkong, Arafura-Meer, Nord- und Ostküste Australiens und weiter östlich bis Samoa und Tahiti.

Eine lokale Überfischung ist jedoch möglich, da sie in ihrem gesamten Verbreitungsgebiet häufig für den menschlichen Verzehr verwendet wird. Es wird angenommen, dass illegale, nicht regulierte und nicht gemeldete Fischerei diese Art in Teilen ihres Verbreitungsgebiets negativ beeinflusst (z.B. auf den Philippinen). Das Ausmaß ist jedoch nicht bekannt.
