Stella (= Stern); fero (= tragen), Latinisierung von „Les Stellifères“ von Cuvier (1816), bezogen auf das strahlenartige Erscheinungsbild des (zum Anfassen) schwammigen Suborbitals von Stellifer stellifer (da keine Typusart vorgeschlagen wurde, ist der Name nicht tautonym mit Bodianus stellifer).
