Etymologie
Benannt zu Ehren von Mary Louisa Duncan Putnam (1832-1903), „geehrte Patronin“ der Davenport Academy of Sciences (heute Putnam Museum, Davenport, Iowa, USA). Sie publizierte die Beschreibung [geschrieben als putnamiae im Text und putnamae auf Bildtafel; viele Überarbeiter benutzen die Schreibweise im Text].
Verbreitung
Indo-Westpazifik: Rotes Meer, Ostafrika, Sokotra, Madagaskar und Persischer Golf bis Neukaledonien und Vanuatu, Nord- bis Südjapan; Fidschi, Tuvalu und Westaustralien. Das genaue Verbreitungsgebiet ist aufgrund der Verwechslung dieser Art mit Sphyraena jello und Sphyraena qenie ungewiss.
