Etymologie
Filamentosus (= fadenförmig), bezieht sich auf den länglichen letzten Weichstrahl der Rückenflosse. (Übersetzt aus: The ETYFish Project)
Verbreitung
Rotes Meer; Indo-Westpazifik: Ostkap und KwaZulu-Natal (Südafrika), Ostafrika, Persischer Golf, Socotra (Jemen), Seychellen, Komoren, Mosambik-Kanal, Madagaskar und Maskarenen (La Réunion, Mauritius, Rodrigues), östlich bis zu den Hawaii-Inseln (USA) und den Gesellschaftsinseln (Französisch-Polynesien), nördlich bis zu den Amami-Inseln und den Osumi-Inseln (Südjapan), südlich bis vor Nordwestaustralien, New South Wales (Australien) und den Kermadec-Inseln.

Gefahren für diese Art: Diese Art wird hauptsächlich mit Grundlangleinen und tiefen Handleinen gefangen und gilt als eine der wichtigsten Arten in der hawaiianischen Offshore-Handleinenfischerei. Obwohl für bestimmte Gebiete keine größeren Bedrohungen festgestellt wurden, wird diese Art in einigen Gebieten möglicherweise stark befischt.
