Etymologie

Bufonius (= krötenartig), sein „großer Kopf und seine Farbe geben ihm das Aussehen einer braunen Kröte“ (Übersetzung). (Übersetzt aus: The ETYFish Project)

Verbreitung

Flüsse im Nordosten Südamerikas vom Maracaibo-See bis nach Ostbrasilien; somit kommt die Art vor in den Ländern Brasilien, Kolumbien, Französisch-Guayana, Surinam, Venezuela und Guyana.
