Etymologie
Vom lateinischen Wort strigatus (= gestreift), da diese Art Querbänder oder Farbstreifen aufweist.
Verbreitung
Microcanthus strigatus ist aus Ostasien, Hawaii und Westaustralien bekannt. In Ostasien kommt sie in Südjapan, Korea, der Ostküste Chinas, Taiwans und Hongkongs vor. Fotos in der Bilddatenbank der Fische des Naturkundemuseums der Präfektur Kanagawa (KPM) zeigen, dass die Art häufig auf der Izu-Halbinsel und der Sagami-Bucht, den Okinawa-Inseln, der Suruga-Bucht und vor der Kii-Halbinsel vorkommt. Microcanthus strigatus bewohnt häufig felsige Gebiete und Felsvorsprünge in warm-gemäßigten Küstenriffen, kann jedoch gelegentlich in Häfen und über Böschungen beobachtet werden. Erwachsene schulen häufig in großen Gruppen. Sie bewohnen in der Regel Tiefen zwischen 10 und 30 m, können aber auch in 0,3 m und bis zu einer Tiefe von 300 m auftreten. In Westaustralien ist die Art vom Kap Leeuwin bis zum Golf von Exmouth bekannt. Sie kommt auch um Hawaii vor, wo sie aus dem Hafen von Honolulu, Haleiwa, Mokuleja, Moiliili, der Kaneohe Bay, Kahala und Molokai gemeldet wurde. Jüngste Umfragen legen nahe, dass die Art jetzt eine eingeschränktere und lokalere Verbreitung im Lydgate State Park in Kauai hat.
