Etymologie

Etymologie nicht erklärt, vielleicht ein Fischname aus einem antiken griechischen Text, den Cuvier auf diese Gattung anwendete (wie er es mit anderen von ihm vorgeschlagenen Gattungen getan hatte, z. B. Synodontis, Salanx, Premnas). Mehrere Quellen geben an, dass der Name „milchig“ bedeutet und sich auf Galaxias argenteus und seine goldenen Flecken bezieht, die an Sterne am Nachthimmel erinnern (obwohl Cuvier die Gattung auf dem gefleckten Galaxias truttaceus [einem Nomen nudum, der später von Valenciennes zur Verfügung gestellt wurde] basiert, er erwähnte keine Flecken oder Farbmarkierungen, gab jedoch an, dass sein Galaxias truttaceus derselbe sein könnte wie Galaxias argenteus).
