Etymologie
Kombination aus Iberia (vom lat. Hiberi / Iberi) und dem Gattungsnamen Cobitis, als Hinweis darauf, dass die Vertreter dieser Untergattung in ihrer Verbreitung auf die Iberische Halbinsel (und Marokko) beschränkt sind.
