Etymologie

Von spilos (= Fleck); pterus (= Flosse), bezieht sich auf schwarzen Fleck in der Rückenflosse. (Übersetzt aus: The ETYFish Project)

Verbreitung

Nordamerika: Atlantische Abdachung vom St. Lawrence-Abfluss in Quebec, Kanada bis zum Potomac-Abfluss in Virginia, USA; Great Lakes (außer Lake Superior), Hudson Bay (Red River) und Mississippi River Becken von Ontario, Kanada und New York bis nach North Dakota und südlich nach Alabama und Ostoklahoma, USA; isolierte Populationen in Ozarks, USA.
