Etymologie

Etymologie nicht erklärt, möglicherweise abgeleitet von balli-potiah, einem assamesischen Namen für diese Art; Mehrere Aquarium-Websites geben an, dass botia ein „asiatisches“ Wort für Krieger oder Soldat ist (möglicherweise in Anspielung auf den suborbitalen Dorn), bieten jedoch keine Quelle. Verbreitung

Vom Indus-Becken in Pakistan bis zum Mae Khlong-Becken in Thailand, durch die Becken des Ganges, Chindwin, Irrawaddy, Sitang und Salween, auch aus Yunnan, China, berichet.

Mögliche Gefahren für diese Art: In den hügeligen Gebieten in Pakistan und Indien nimmt die Lebensraumqualität infolge der Entwaldung ab, was zu Schlammbildung führt. Darüber hinaus hat die Dürre in den letzten 30 Jahren in Pakistan zu einem Verlust an geeignetem Lebensraum zwischen 21% und 50% geführt. Die Art wird in Pakistan als nahezu bedroht eingestuft. In China ist diese Art immer noch häufig und verbreitet.
