Etymologie

Barathron, das Abyss (= der Abgrund), bezieht sich auf den Tiefsee-Lebensraum von Barathronus bicolor; onus (= vermutlich eine Latinisierung von onos, ein Name, der auf Aristoteles zurück geht und sich ursprünglich auf Phycis blennoides (Gadiformes: Gadidae) bezog, jedoch häufig fälschlicherweise auf Merluccius merluccius (Gadiformes: Merlucciidae) angewandt wurde und oft als Anhängsel für einen Seehecht-ähnlichen Fisch verwendet wird.
